With Firmness in the Right: American Diplomatic Action Affecting Jews: 1840-1945, by Cyrus Adler and Aaron M. Margalith.American Jewish Committee, NY, 1946. Octavo, 489 pages, blue cloth covers with title label on spine, dust jacket. The book originally appeared under the title American Intercession on Behalf of Jews in the Diplomatic Correspondence of United States, 1840-1938, but was updated and enlarged by two chapters by Margalith after Adler’s death in 1940. The book surveys American policies which had impacts on refugees, and how these policies affected Jews, from the mid-19th century through World War II. From the preface by Aaron Margalith: There seems to be a general misconception in this country that the action by the American Government in recent years to secure cooperation among democratic countries in aid of refugees from Germany marked an new turn in the foreign policy of our nation. It is hoped that the present volume will serve to dispel this and similar misconceptions. The student of the history of the foreign policy of the United States knows that this action was in complete harmony with the polices developed during an earlier period by a number of great American statesmen.
