Here I have a very nice E.S. Ritchie Gimbal Compass . The rim is marked 10685, E.S. Ritchie Boston, Patented April 7, 1863, April 10, 1866, May 18, 1866, July 18, 1876, and Nov. 15, 1878. The central bouyancy curved card is marked Ritchie Boston, Patented Aug. 17, 1875. Diameter of bowl 8-1/2", Diameter with gimbal is 9-5/8", Depth of compass bowl is 5" . The glass is in great shape with some cratches. This compass is in good condition for it's age. It works very well to find north. It is full of fluid inside. I contacted the Ritchie Co. in Pembroke, MA and they sent me a copy on the ledger page, I will send along to you. It weighs 17lbs and 5 ounces. This compass was first purchased on May 10, 1880. I can't make out how purchased it (G.D. Morris & Co.?) It is housed in a mahogany box with no lid and some broken pieces that can be fixed. The gimbal is missing a piece that goes over the gimbal knotch. The other is there. The following information comes from NMAH Navigation Smithsonian website and I will send along a copy with the compass. Ritchie Edward Samuel Ritchie (1814-1895) was the most innovative instrument maker in nineteenth century America, making important contributions to both science and navigation. The business he began in 1850 became E. S. Ritchie & Son in 1866 and E. S. Ritchie & Sons in 1867, and moved from Boston
