Pratt was born in Virginia in 1903, and worked and painted in Washington DC for most of his life. He studied under artists at the Washington School of Art (1919 – 1923), and at the Corcoran School of Art 1927-28, 1929-30, and 1944-45 seasons. He found employment at the Corcoran as a maintenance man, later as a superintendent and foreman (1938-55). The Corcoran Gallery presented a solo exhibition of his works in 1945, and included his paintings in their Biennial Exhibitions of 1945 and 1951 and in their Annual Exhibitions of 1949, 1972 and 1955. Sam Pratt was widely collected by his teachers and others, including Richard Lahey, Burtis Baker, Richard Merryman and Eugen Weitz, as well as by discerning Washington collectors including Jacqueline Kennedy and many others. His oil painting “Moonlight” is in the permanent collection of the Corcoran. He was celebrated for his en plein air landscapes, luminist “moonlight” paintings, and his Fauvist pallette. His work is prized by collectors in Japan, where he has been referred to as “the last American Fauvist”.
