This auction is for a very fine, early-English topographical watercolour, with gouache highlighting, depicting a busy street scene in Antwerp, Belgium, with numerous figures, horses and carriages. A shop sign offering steamboat services to Rotterdam suggests the scene is near the port area of the city. It is inscribed to bottom left 'Antwerp. Night. 1842'. The drawing is on paper laid on an old card and has an image measuring approximately 35 x 25.5cm. It is in good condition overall with very minor foxing and backboard staining to the sky in the extreme right, suggesting a light clean would be beneficial. It is offered unframed as shown. The images form part of the item description. This is a really well executed architectural and figurative study with the look and feel of a Samuel Prout (1783-1852), an elected member of the Old Watercolour Society who travelled repeatedly in Europe, including Belgium, and specialised in well-populated, architectural watercolours, although p otential buyers should make independent judgments of this based on the information and images provided. There is no reserve and but a very modest starting price for a lovely early-English topographical drawing. Transport costs as cited are for delivery within the mainland UK and Northern Ireland and include insurance. Postage to other countries, and other non-mainland
