2 SAMURAI : KUNIYASU (1830) ORIGINAL Japanese Woodblock Print Artist KUNIYASU UTAGAWA (1794-1832) Date 1830 Size Oban 10" x 14 1/8" 2 washi papers in this set Condition Good. Good vivid color. Very good composition. KUNIYASU UTAGAWA (1794-1832) whose prints are uncommon, his colors being well chosen pupil of Toyokuni Utagawa. The Utagawa school is the most prolific school of Ukiyoe artist in late EDO period (mid 18c-mid 19c) KUNIYASU produced prints of actor portraits (yakusyae) These two original prints depict Two famous samurai actors Matsumoto Koshiro and Iwai Jyozaburo. They are snow in period costumes subduing robers on a beach with a wild ocean and scenic pine tree. This dramatic scene is rare in these types of prints showing kuniyasu as a talented artist.
