Ronnie Davis, mastermind of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, is a man of many talents--namely his ability to present inflammatory material in a barely civilized format that forces his audience to toss about ideas, not chairs. This July 1965 "Minstrel Show, or Civil Rights in a Cracker Barrel," featured a series of skits with themes taken from the daily newspapers and were performed by an integrated cast in blackface, benefiting SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and MFDP(Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party). SNCC had recently grown from a Southern issue group to a bona-fide national civil rights force. MFDP, via its challenge for black Mississippians at the 1964 Democratic National Convention, set the DNC straight regarding the inclusion of black voters. As the manager of the SF Mime Troupe, Bill Graham realized the potential of promoting events like this. He was soon filling the Fillmore Auditorium for his rock concerts. The poster, measuring 15" x 20" is on thick (but not cardboard) porous paper. T were very few of these posters created; and most were posted, so finding one with no pinholes is difficult. This poster does not have pinholes, but shows some wear. All four corners are intact, with no pinholes or rips. The top left corner shows the most wear with numerous handling marks.
