Los Tres Reyes Magos a caballo (The Three Wise Men on horses) hand carved from wood and polychrome by Florencio Caban(1876-1951) from the town of Camuy, Puerto Rico. Missing the horses, the hands and some paint. Collector's item.Probably carved in the early part of the 20th. century. In Puerto Rico, although the Catholic Church has not acknowledged them as saints, they are referrred to as " los Santos Reyes" and subject to many "promesas and velorios" on the eve of the day of their festivity in January 6 (Feast of the Epiphany) thanking them for their miraculous powers. Almost every house in Puerto Rico has a set of three kings. Traditionally the Three Wise Men are depicted on horses and not on camels in Puerto Rico. This piece is 8" x 8 1/2 " x 3 ". Santo carving in Puerto Rico has a tradition for over 4 centuries originating as part of the Catholic evangelization by the Spanish friars who came to the island.
