You are bidding on a very old clay pipe made by S. Seiler from the town of Schemnitz. This old pipe is signed S. Seiler and it is made of black matte clay. It has a seven lobed shell or scalloped design that covers the bottom of the outside bowl. The bowl has eight flat panels and an impressed seal S.SEILER on the side. The bowl is painted black with raised red dots surrounded by white rings. From the base to the top of the bowl it measures 3 1/8 inches. The bowl top has a metal wind cap that has a pointed wave pattern tirm line. On top is a shell design metal breather cap that snaps closed and the hinge works great. To the top of the stem it is 10 3/8inches. It has a cherry wood stem topped by a bakelite type mouth piece which has some chips.See photos. There is a silver metal cap where the stem attaches to the bowl. This S. SEILER Pipe is a wonderful addition to a collection or the start of one. According to "Scheminitz is a mining town north of Budapest, in a region once known as old Slovakia, bounded by Austria in the southwest and Hungary in the southeast. They perfected a reddish brown or terracotta stoneware pipe bowl, often found in other hues of matte black, blue and green.
