Joseph Csatari painting, "All Out for Scouting," 1976, featuring Scouts walking across the white cover dressed and equipped for Scout-like activities. 5th printing (Dec 1977, 350 000 copies)Â--480 numbered pages These editions were bound with a "perfect" binding (like a pad of paper). Not many of the these books survived medium use and remained intact without missing pages, entire sections separating from the covers. This is what makes this book so rare! It's in mint condition! It's like new! This edition radically changed the handbook by deleting traditional subjects and adding new concepts. It was described as a "radical" change. The edition de-emphasized camping and made outdoor skills optional in the lower three ranks and eliminated outdoor merit badges from the required list for the higher three ranks. To become an Eagle Scout the list eliminated Camping, Cooking, Nature, Swimming, Lifesaving. The objective of the new program was to include inner-city Scouting. For example the Handbook shows a drawing of a boy talking to a policeman asking for directions to find his way. It changed from many of the programs of the Scouting before 1972. In 1978 Greenbar Bill changed back to the traditional concepts. The 8th Edition left out how to wear a neckerchief, when to wear the uniform, lashings, stars, fire without matches, tracking/trailing,
