SIXTH PLATE DAGUERREOTYPE OF HEAVILY BEARDED MAN IN RARE HALVERSON UNION CASE

This auction is for a sixth plate daguerreotype of a heavily-bearded younger man contained in a Halverson case. The daguerreotype portrait is striking, with rich tonality and absolutely amazing focus. Condition of the plate is fair to poor, with mat scratches on the LH side of the plate, also thin vertical scratches from one side to the other as well as a few oxidation dots scattered here and there on the plate. Despite the condition issues, this portrait views very well in hand and portrays a very handsome man with a thick head of hair, a dominant mustache and a beard so thick you have to look at it several times to get the feel of how thick his beard really was. The Halverson case which contains the portrait is in outstanding original condition with no flaws to the nickel silver case; the embossed leather pads front and back look as though they had been manufactured a week ago rather than 160 years ago. A beautiful case and a very attractive portrait; you will be pleased to add this portrait and case to your collection of early images. Overseas bidders will pay more for shipping than the amount listed in the auction.
