The Locomotive Because of the horrific condition of the paint on this 1688, I've sprayed it a gunmetal gray. One corner of the cab just below one of the ladders had been broken off but I've repaired it. You cannot tell where my repair is unless you look very closely--I've duplicated the steps. The locomotive has a smoke unit inside like the one pictured One of the loco's drive rods pushes against the smoke lever to produce the smoke. I've had to alter the front wheel bracket so the smoker would fit. The red lantern markers are new. The handrails have been shined up and replaced in new shiny cotter pins. This engine is very light. The Tender I've had to fill in a lot of broken and/or damaged spots on this tender. It, too, has been spray painted. It has a well lubricated air whistle inside with new armature brushes. It is very heavy, maybe even heavier than the locomotive. Fortunately, the "Lionel Lines" on the side are still visible. The tender's rear coupler knuckle has a new spring inside to pop it open. The wires running from the trucks to the whistle assembly are Lionel soft wire.
