African Tribal Art Songye Ceremonial Adze Congo Material: wood, metal Condition: good Size: approx 17" (43 cm) Weight: 75g ref J710 Songye Ceremonial Adze Congo These finely-carved axes and adzes were ceremonial items, carried by chiefs and other senior clan members as insignia of authority in many tribes of the Luba group. Wear on the handle, as well as beautiful style, show that this is a genuine and well-used implement. The face is sensitively carved and a real work of art. The symbolism of the design is significant -- the metal blade emerging from the mouth represents the power of command -- the spoken word that can strike and kill. A fascinating artefact.
