Interesting and Good Working condition 19686 (see date codes on bottom) Vietnam War era Zippo. Cover shuts close and tight hinge with the Zippo "Klink" when you open. Front has artwork of the famous USS Weiss APD 135 ( Destroyer) sailing into South Vietnam ! Back has engraved words "Yea Thou I Sail through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for I am the evilest motherfxxker in the valley" (note the difference from the other infantry units words of "Yea thou WE Walk") I did a search and found the following infor on the ship:- USS WEISS was named in honor of Marine Sergeant Carl Walter Weiss who was killed in action in November 1942 at Guadalcanal. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty. Click for info on 2006 Weiss Reunion USS Weiss DE-547, a John C. Butler class destroyer escort, was cancelled on 5 June 1944 before completion, and her materials were scrapped. The name Weiss however, was concurrently reassigned to DE-719 a Rudderow class destroyer-escort. WEISS was one of 13 Rudderow Class DEs that w redesignated and laid down as Crosley Class High-speed Transports (APDs) which involved extending the DE's superstructure out to the ship's sides to accommodate transporting troops and UDT teams.
