his gorgeous Turkey Red & overdyed Green calico quilt features a charming and unusual little riff on the eight-point star. Its petite stars are applique and their hand-cut nature seems to take them halfway from stars to blossoms. Perfectly matched to this overall delicacy and small-scale blocks are the excellent hand-quilting. The quilt is bordered on three sides, in crisp, strong condition and only has some completely minor little flaws. Circa 1860's or perhaps a little earlier.

The quilt measures about 64 x 82 inches . The blocks are 7 inches square, the on-point centers about 5 1/4 and the little reverse-applique centers 3/4-inch or less.

The hand-quilting is exceptionally nice, with 7-11 little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. Each portion of the blocks is inset-outlined by the piece and then the star and round center are further outlined around their outer edge. The borders and sashing are inset-outline quilted and then quilted in freehand 1/2-inch diagonals.

The quilt is entirely handmade and both the dense, tiny stitches of the applique and the fine tight piecing of the seams are beautifully done.
