Appearance & Subject: This is a superb pair of earthenware Staffordshire figure groups of twochildren with sheep.The children are in highland dress, and they havenaturalistic skin tones with black hair.These groups depict a boy with a ram and a girlwith a ewe. Possibly Shepherd and Shepherdessgroups, but these are also often said to be RoyalChildren.The children both stand in front of their sheep, withtheir elbows resting on the sheep's back. The sheepare looking round, so that they are facing the sameway as the children - towards the viewer.Both groups stand on a naturalistic ground, and on roughly oval bases with a plinth in the white with a lineof gilt around the front of the base.These groups are very well coloured, with a mix ofover glaze and under glaze colours used. This includes cobalt blue jackets, multi coloured tartans, and colourful feathered hats for the children.The sheep are decorated with shredded clay to createtheir wooly coats. More shredded clay is used on thenaturalistic decoration
