Auction is for Germany Steinbach Wizard of Oz Nutcracker S624 in great condition. The auction is also includes the box as see in the picture. It comes with the box notes number S624 made in Germany. The left hand is holding a bar with two birds. The right hand is holding a green orb. The pointed green hat is the same color green as the orb and has a circle purple trim around it. The green velvet cape has golden edging and a purple lining. He has a purple rope belt and is wearing green shoes with golden orbs. The original Steinbach tag is attached to his right wrist (prefer to pictures). His mouth will open when he is laying 45 degree down. Dimensions approx: 18" H, 7" W and 6" D. The History of the Nutcracker Woodcarvings, used as souvenirs, gifts and for religious purposes, were popular since the 11th century. In the German regions of Sonneberg and Erzgebirge, near the Bohemian border, the Ore Mountains were rich with mineral deposits. Many villagers worked in mines, but carved wood during winter until they could return to work. When mineral deposits expired, miners began to make woodcarvings and nutcrackers all year. When the lathe became readily accepted by the people in this forest area the new trade of woodturning was established in the 15th and 16th century under the rule of Elector August the Strong of Saxony.
