STONE CEREMONIAL ARTIFACT, DUBLIN, VIRGINIA, 19th century find Length: 3 3/4" Width: 2 3/4" Height: 2 1/2" Weight: 2 lbs. 6 1/2 oz One of the most peculiar stone artifacts I've encountered. This box-like, high polished patina stone was uncovered in the 19th century along the banks of the Dismal River in western North Carolina , not far from the town of Dublin . Descendants of the land owner said their ancestor was looking for crawfish when he came upon an uprooted tree revealing a cache of stone tools. Within the pit were pestles, axe heads, bowls, spear points and this unusual object. I recently acquired the lot of these items and will shortly list them. I do not know what this piece is or its function. When faced with such a conundrum, the protocol is to say "ceremonial." While this seems an easy logistical "out," there may be substance to the construct. The stone is made of a dense, yellow, red-tinted quartz. Close inspection of the sides reveal pressure flaking removal of the surface stone to make for a somewhat flat surface. One side (the top?) appears to be beveled or angled with sloping sides. Much energy must have gone into the sand-polish and probably leather strapping of this piece--that said, there is still a large amount of ground water decomposition to the sides of this very unusual artifact. A fascinating piece
