Stunning! Arctic Polar Bear Butter Dish Silver Plate NR

is a silver plate butter dish made by Meriden B. Company in the rare Arctic Style that was popular in the 1870's - 1890's. This particular style is hard to come by, and highly sought after because of it's American design origin. As we all well know, most styles made in North America imitated styles from Europe; not so with the Arctic style.
The bowl features two outstanding figural polar bears seated on the handles, as well as a winged cherub guiding a dolphin with his spear. The rim of the dish features seals, men fishing and a scene of Eskimo hunting a polar bear. The dome also features an etched polar bear floating on a piece of ice with icebergs in the distance. The scene of the rim and dome are repeated on opposite sides.
Overall condition is quite good, typical wear for it's age as pictured. The glass liner does not appear to original, and has some glass flaking off the rim, but is functional so I have decided to include it. The arm of the cherub is split, as seen in picture 5. The butter dish measures 7.5 inches tall to the top of the finial, and 9 inches across the polar bear handles. Bid with confidence, please see pictures.
