This is a superb example of an early antique .. Victorian Staffordshire .. `Joseph Fry` Figure, ... made in the Staffordshire Potteries, ... and dating from circa. 1845. The figure is superbly modelled .. as Elizabeth Fry`s husband Joseph, .. seated with a child, .. his right hand holding a book, .. his left hand resting on top of the child`s head, ... wearing a long jacket, .. neckerchief and trousers, ... decorated with both over-glaze & under-glaze `cobalt-blue` enamels.

Joseph and Elizabeth Fry were London Quakers. In 1810 Elizabeth "visited a woman`s prison, and seeing the neglect and terrible conditions the woman and their children were living in .. she devoted her life to prison reform, founding hospitals and homeless organisations." ... A & N Harding.

The figure is in very good condition. There are no cracks or chips. There is a little age-related wear to the over-glaze enamels, ... this is minimal .. as shown in the photos. Height : 7.5 ins. / 19.0 cms.
