TheTanakh(/tɑːˈnɑːx/;[1]Hebrew:תַּנַ"ךְ‬,pronounced[taˈnaχ]or[təˈnax]; alsoTenakh,Tenak,Tanach), also called theMikraorHebrew Bible, is thecanonical collectionof Jewish texts, which is also a textual source for theChristianOld Testament. These texts are composed mainly inBiblical Hebrew, with some passages inBiblical Aramaic(in the books ofDaniel,Ezraand a few others). The traditional Hebrew text is known as theMasoretic Text. The Tanakh consists of twenty-four books.

Tanakhis anacronymof the firstHebrew letterof each of the Masoretic Text's three traditional subdivisions:Torah("Teaching", also known as the Five Books of Moses),Nevi'im("Prophets") andKetuvim("Writings")—hence TaNaKh. The nameMikra(מקרא‬), meaning "that which is read", is another Hebrew word for theTanakh. The books of the Tanakh were passed on by each generation and, according to rabbinic tradition were accompanied by an oral tradition, called theOral Torah.
