Tom Wolfe. THE RIGHT STUFF. 1983. Handtyped and hand-corrected introduction! Up for auction is a 6-pg handtyped introduction to Tom Wolfe's THE RIGHT STUFF. The intro, written and hand-edited throughout by Wolfe, was crafted for the revised, 1983 hardcover edition of Wolfe's classic reporting on U.S. pilots engaged in postwar experiments with experimental rocket-powered, high-speed aircraft as well as documenting the stories of the first Project Mercury astronauts selected for the Nasa space program. Pilots included Chuck Yeager and John Glenn who occasionally signed copies of this book though they're pretty rare. It was also turned into a riveting movie directed by Ron Howard. Won a bunch of Oscars too. The manuscript is in excellent condition with copious changes hand-written by Wolfe throughout. The back of page 5 has a mess of red crayon scribbles, most likely by Wolfe's young daughter Alexandra who would have been just the right age to screw with her dad's typing. The marks bleed onto page 5 as seen in the pics above but don't detract, in fact they make it kind of sweet to think of Wolfe a dad like anyone else. One-of-a-kind Tom Wolfe ephemera, and an interesting bit of writing to pour over, corrections and all.
