C.Under National Hotel--Smiling Face Bursting Through Paper BroadsideVignettes of Locomotive 2.75 x 4.5" medium-weight card stock Mildly comic graphic of a smiling African-American with his head poked through a broadside which advertises the services of ticket agent William M. Frank.(Note: We have seen a couple of other of this ticket agent's trade cards - identical to this one except with a different figure bursting through the paper. The image was a staple in musical hall and later circus and vaudeville ads, and it's rather surprising to see on a railroad ticket agent's cards.) Ad text on the back with some fancy type and a vignette of a locomotive like the one on the front. Our curiosity got the better of us regarding the William M. Frank named on this card who could "cheerfully" provide "railroad ticket to all points," and whose stock in trade was making people's journeys "pleasant" - so we set out to pin down his identity. We easily found a record for him in the 1880 Census for Washington City at his residence on F Street NE: William Frank, age 28, "Deals in R. R. Tickets," born in NY of Russian immigrant
