US Passport Dated June 2, 1857 for 24 year old man, wife and his sister.

Has various stampings and writings on front and back of passport from countries including Italy and France. Photoscan of back of passport document is reproduced on the back of the framing for viewing purposes.

Lewis Cass (1786-1866) was Governor of the Michigan Territory (1813-1831), and later represented Michigan in the US Senate (1845-1848, 1849-1857). He was the Democratic candidate for President in 1848, running on a platform of Popular Sovereignty (which would have left to each state the decision on whether to allow slavery there). When he lost to Whig Zachary Taylor, he became the first non-incumbent Democrat to lose a Presidential election. Cass was Secretary of War under President Jackson (1831-1836) and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan (1857-1860).
