University of Oregon Track Coach Bill Hayward Personal Letter To Mr. L.H. Gregory Sports Reporter Oregonian in 1947 The story of this letter: We went to an estate sale and bought a suitcase of 1930's and 40's sports reports on N.W. Colleges. We paid twice the 3 figure asking price because it was only good business since the family did not know what their Grandfather had collected through the years or the rareness and value. One item was a personal letter dated June 14th 1947 from Bill Hayward to his long time friend H. L. Gregory, sports reporter for the Portland based Oregonian. Bill was hired in 1904 by the University of Oregon to coach the track and field team. In 1912 he was selected coach of the U.S. Summer Olympic team in Stockholm Sweden. In 1919 a new field was built and named Hayward Field in his honor. He coached at Oregon for 44 years. This is a wonderful letter that needs to stay in the University of Oregon School System. Bill passed away Dec. 14th 1947 6 months after this letter. On a personal note, we would love to donate this letter to the school, but it is the highlight of this suitcase and represents our best chance of getting the investment back. Thank You for Looking!
