The Battle of the Argonne was the turning point in WWI. US forces under General Pershing broke through the German lines, paving the way for their capitulation and an end to the War. For auction are a group of 7 aerial and reconaissance photographs measuring 9"x7" and a related map of one sector of the front measuring approximately 13"x17". They are related to the US 29th Division Signal Corps. One photo shows the ruined town of Montfaucon, another shows the strategic village of Ivoiry aka "Solid Ivory". Others show various sectors of the front, including Hill 304. Ruined houses and craters can be seen in many of the photos. The map, labelled "Bar-Le-Duc Staging Area 1/80,000" is a cut out portion of a French road map which has sectors mapped out in grease pencil. A wonderful resource for the historian or collector. The items are intact and generally in very good condition. The map is in excellent condition. All photos have some curling at the ends. The photo of Montfaucon has some cracks along the edge. They have no major defects. The only problem is that the photos SMELL LIKE OIL. They don't appear to have been in contact with gas or oil-they are clean, as was the period envelope they were stored in. They must have been stored near a leaking oil tank or gas can. I have not tried to air them out.
