This is a 1895 pattern Officer forage cap in good condition and very presentable. It has a couple of features that are unusual and not exactly conforming to the 1895 regulation. Since Officers purchase their own uniforms it is conceivable that it was custom ordered as it is. It is also possible that originally this was a National Guard Officer hat or perhaps even some GAR or military organization. Interested bidders will have to make their own determination and bid accordingly. The height of the hat is 3 and 1/4 inches tall per regulation, however the fabric used is a black cloth like a gabardine. T are several small pin holes on the front of the cap from old insignia application. The cloth is dusty. The cotton or mohair band is only 1 and 1/8 inch wide. The gilt side buttons are standard Federal Army. The bullion chin strap is silver and quite tarnished. The tar visor shows some storage marks including one that is about 2 inches long, just the commonly seen deformation due to poor storage in hot conditions. On the inside, the hat is in very good condition being complete with its sweat band and a complete padded lining. The name "D. ROSE" is nicely sewn on the inside.
