Original News photo dated 1945 of a member of the Hitler Youth being told by a US Sgt. that his death sentence is being commuted to life imprisonment. Original news caption printed on front reads : "...Feb. 10- Hitler Youth Gets American Mercy--Karl Arno Punzeller, 16, of Monschau, Germany, a Hitler Youth Leader who was sentenced to death in a German civil court for reporting American troop movements to the enemy, hears Sgt. Eric Hartmann of Albany, N.Y. read an order from Lt. Gen. Courtney Hodges commuting the sentence to life imprisonment. Witnessing the occasion in an Aachen prison is Maj. James D. Clemens (left) of Bowling Green, Mo.....1945" Original news photo from the file of the "San Francisco Examiner" dated Feb. 10, 1945. Also has original "Examiner" received date stamp on back of Feb. 11, 1945, which would be the day this photo was filed in their library after being use for publication. Good condition with normal editorial markings and touchups on photo from production and minor creasing. Also has original news clipping attached to back showing how this photo was used for publication. Measures 11 3/4 x 8" approximately.
