Very Large JAPANESE CLOISONNE Akasuke Shosen Dove Vase Old Meiji Shosen Musen Translucent Pigeon's Blood 12" Description: Meiji Period (1868-1912) tomei-jippo (in this older type, translucent enamel frosted ground) Japanese shosen (limited wire) cloisonne vase with very thin silver yusen (wire-work), fine flowers with musen (wireless) shading, exquisitely rendered dove or pigeon in shosen, statuesque at one foot tall (12 inches). Condition: In very fine condition, no enamel loss, but a nickel sized bruise, shown below, above the floral decoration at the upper left; additionally, t are some barely visible stress lines in three places all in a direct line from just above the bird's head to the shoulder of the vase. None of these line clusters is more than an inch long, and all are dark and hard to see (pictured below). The very fine silver wire has a golden tint to it, but I believe that is just the patina and not gold yusen. Comments: The original translucent akasuke (pigeon's blood), older than the prolific variety made during the 20th century. The rendering of the bird is much like a brush painting, considered one of the finest achievements in musen or shosen techniques. This vase exemplifies an early effort at creating a painting that was liberated from cloisons. Shown with other items listing tonight for size reference. LOW
