An old cast jaw trap, Victor # 1. The riveted pan is marked VICTOR across the top, then No 1 to the left of the rivet, and ONEIDA NY across the bottom. 98% readable... The name KENWOOD NY on some Oneida trap pans began in 1890. My estimate on when this trap was made is somewhere between 1879 and 1895. {somewhere around there} I could be off by a few years, but It is still an early trap. Remember, the 'humped cross" on the cross bar wasn't developed until 1909......This is a 'post- pan trap'... The jaws are cast, the chain is the cut-link chain used on all the traps during this time period. (prior to 1893). In 1893, Oneida announced plans to equip traps with the 'new wire-link' chain that was sometimes called 'bow-tie' chain. {I am trying to find the reference on that} Cast or cut-link chains were still available, but at higher cost. The pictures look like the trap is black, but it isn't. It has a good dark brown color, with pitting and minor surface rust. It should be cleaned up , maybe a litlle WD40, or whatever you use...... Don't miss this one, You have not seen an old Victor long spring trap complete with chain and marked ONEIDA NY on the pan on Ebay. This is a great collector trap....over 100 years old.. I had a listing for a #14 Victor jump trap, an early one, ( a collector trap); but someone reported it to Ebay, and it
