unusual 19th century gold and carved lava brooch . the hallmarks are a makers name and a french gold control mark of an animals head either a boars head for paris or a horses head which is a provincial mark . hall marks are on the end of the C clasp which is a typically french place to hallmark . condition is good . designed to be attached in an upright position with the pin pointing down . ( possibly for a mans lapel) the carved lava was popular as a grand tour souvenir from Italy from pompei vesuvius region . theres a quality of gold smithing here constant with a very skilled maker. the cameo isnt cracked or chipped its an earthy dark terra cotta colour , acid tested I think maybe 14ct but I cant be sure . the pins made of gold also. 2.2inches long 5.5cm . the pin extends beyond the body of the brooch which is 1.4inches long ,the panel is 0.7in ,1.7cm .
