This very tiny mesh coin purse is of the Victorian Period of old Europe. Hallmarks on the heavy cast repousse drop sides denote it's creation in the Frankfurt area in or about 1870. The mesh of the little carrier purse is very solid, in one continuous piece, and fits between the solid handle edges which are squared at each corder of the upper part of the container. Bottom area from the old rivet hinge flutes outward with outstanding raised scroll designs. It opens to one inch and allows enough room within for an article of perhaps 1 1/4"x 1 1/4". Most likely it was used for a coin or a tiny perfume flask or even a "mourning" object from a lost loved one...ie; a lock of hair or a piece of cloth or a ring. From the opposite sides of top edge extend a solid linked chain....each link soldered to the next. This chain is in 2 sections, both of which extend 12" to the old spring clasp. Base material is an alloy mix of pewter, nickel, and zinc....popularly used in object like this in that era. Front and backsides have demurely scalloped hand-cut framed border. The clasp is a roll-over hollow barrel one that fastens to the receiving edge . Sides of this piece are hallmarked with old Austrian markings reflecting the area of Frankfurt, Germany (a part of the Austrian Hungarian Empire in that day) in the mid 19th century. Amazingly well kept,
