A Victorian Tantalus Containing 3 Original Hobnail Cut Glass Decanters Attractive Old English Oak Shaped Sides Brass Decorative Mounts 1880's Style Brass Carrying Handle Secure Working Lock and Key This is a superb example of the Victorian Tantalus "Tantalus was the ancient Greek who stole the food of the Gods and served them his own son instead. For his punishment, Zeus , sent him to Hades for eternity and had him placed so that he could see water and fruit but when he reached for them, they were no longer within his grasp. Because he was already dead, he could not die again from hunger and thirst. Thus, we have a tantalizing experience. Tantalus, tfore, is a very apt name for this locked drinks container." In Victorian times, the servants were fond of a little tipple as they went about their work. The invention of the Tantalus put an end to the tippling of the Lord's liqueur.
