Good sets of goggles from the First World War are getting increasingly difficult to find, and particularly in good condition. This is one of those rare gems that you won't see around very often.
This design of flying goggle was typical of what was worn by RFC aviators in the clouds above the trenches and is very similar in style to the Triplex goggles shown on page 135 of Mick Prodger's indispensable reference for collectors, "Vintage Flying Helmets."
These goggles are in excellent shape overall. The glass lenses are beautiful, just about as good as you'll find anyw in goggles nearly 100 years old (see photos). The sheer fabric surrounds are intact and undamaged. The fur lining the eyepieces is all t as well. The only demerit I could give this set is the elastic head strap, which is predictably slack. However, for a few cents and a minute or two of your time, this could be easily replaced. If done, this set would certainly be wearable today.
Offered at a reasonable opening with NO RESERVE, so bid to win!
Note: The helmet shown is for display purposes only and is not included in this auction.
Postage $5.50 to US locations; $10.00 overseas.
