Vintage Book The Marble Faun A Romance of Monte Beni by Nathaniel Hawthorne A. L. Burt Company, Publishers no date Since t is no postscript, this is a reprint of the first edition. One of the great American authors of the 19th century, Nathaniel Hawthorne grew up in New England and published his first novel, Fanshawe , in 1828. Though he went on to help lay the foundations of the American short story, Hawthorne is more widely known for his novels The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of Seven Gables (1851). Hawthorne's other famous books include Twice-Told Tales (1837) and The Marble Faun (1860). From 1853 to 1859 Hawthorne lived in England and in Italy, but returned to the United States and died t in 1864. The Marble Faun or, The Romance of Monte Beni was w ritten in England and based in Rome. Hawthorne was inspired to write his romance when he saw the Faun of Praxiteles in a Roman sculpture gallery. The Marble Faun is Hawthorne's most unusual romance, and possibly one of the strangest major works of American fiction. Written on the eve of the American Civil War, Hawthorne set his story in a fantastical Italy. The romance mixes elements of a fable, pastoral, gothic novel, and travel guide.
