We have just bought Two pieces of American Folk Art that was just found at an eastern Indiana farm estate that was close to the Ohio line, both may have been by same maker, both have unusual construction and someone might know who made them by how they are made, neither one is mint but they are very interesting, estimate on age is early 20th Century and please check out other piece on our other listings.1- Civil War Soldier 25 in. Whirligig, body looks like wood but appears to have a heavy gesso covering or is all stone - the material is a softer carvable material, it does not appear to be plaster as the whirligig is quite heavy & there are No mold seams & plaster would not have survived the outside in the rain. However it shows wood graining & what looks like age splits. It has old blue paint, brim, paddles are some sort of hand molded poly resin, has iron shaft with two wood spools that arms swing on, has threaded pipe that runs from bottom thru leg and up thru Body to back recess in head, this could have been mounted on base at one time. Condition is as found, piece of brim on hat missing, propeller shaft on his right arm has damage and needs repair, see photo, gouges to bottom front of legs, see photo, looks to be old paint but paddles have been painted at least two or three times. Body paint is 1 st or 2nd paint, dark staining
