Vintage D-guard French trench knife from GRAS bayonet

Came from one of the most prominent military antique auction establishments in USA .

The original collector’s tag says: “fighting knife wwI U.S. or France Soldier made from French Gras bayonet (val.200)”

Spine has nice crisp engraved maker mark (St. Etienne France Arsenal 1877). Blade has inspection diamond w/”S”.

Beautiful blade and well taken care of. Dent-free metal scabbard, shortened from the original one.

The whole knife is strong and solid as a rock. Very skillfully executed and perfectly balanced. The

D-guard is from strong 3-4mm steel stock. The fit into scabbard leaves 4mm gap.

The handle is from thick seamless leather tube over, possibly, wood - all in great condition.

Blade = 8½″

OL =13½ ″ …. with scabbard = 14″
