You are bidding on a gorgeous, vintage porcelain double kingfisher ("Eisvogel") figurine made by master German Volkstedt/Thüringia manufacturer Karl Ens. The two kingfishers playfully stand facing each other on a triangle-shaped base of branches. The bird on top of the branches seems to be looking amusedly down at the other bird, who is looking upward with his wings outstretched. Perhaps they are playing a game of "king of the mountain". Both birds are spectacularly colored in hues of blue, turquoise, yellow, peach and orange. Every detail on these birds is perfect and true-to-life -- from their finely detailed heads, wings and soft breast feathers to their lively eyes.
This figurine is in superb condition, with no known nicks, chips, cracks, flakes or restorations. (Any white spots in the photos are just reflections off the glossy surface.) It measures approximately 8-3/4 inches (22cm) tall, 5-1/2 inches (14cm) wide and 5 inches (13cm) deep. The figurine bears the older blue windmill stamp on its underside.
The Porzellanfabrik Karl Ens was founded in 1890 and existed until 1972. The Ens line of parrots and birds is absolutely breathtaking, and belongs in the top echelon of quality and beauty along with Meissen and Rosenthal.
