This bayonet was produced by Camillus during the first contract the company was awarded on 08/26/1944, finishing in January 1945, before the switch was made to the second type butt in February 1945. The grip presumably was leather with the normal 6 groove and V shape, however this unique bayonet's grip has been field-modified to be slimmer and has been wrapped in twine. The dark brown plastic spacers at each end of the grip are also indicative of bayonets produced during the first run of 224,893 units. The notched spacer at the butt was to allow the catch retaining pin to be removed.The pommel is marked by Standard Products and features starburst staking.The Ordnance Shell and Flame inspection and acceptance mark is on the opposite side of the lower guard from the "U.S. M4 Camillus" model and manufacturers mark. The guard itself is tight with no movement whatsoever.The blade is factory sharpened after Parkerizing and has retained a remarkable amount of said smooth Parkerizing.The scabbard is marked "U.S.M8", but is fitted with a M8A1 hanger. It is also stamped "BMCO" indicating it was manufactured by Victory Plastics Division of Beckwith Manufacturing Company during WWII.
