Beautiful Moroccan wedding sash or belt. Also known as hzam, hizam and hezam. Vibrant colors in silk brocade. The two basic color schemes are purple and gold or orange on one side and dusty blue/gray and gold on the other. Both sides are intricately woven with the khamsa or khmissa symbol on each end. Long cord fringe with weighted tassels on the ends. It is kind of stiff like a tapestry with an orange woven backing. Traditionally this sash would be folded in half so one of the color schemes would display, then wound around the waist over the dress like a corset. The were used by both Jews and Arabs.Dimensions are 172" long, 22" wide, the fringe is about 64" long.I obtained this hzam from an estate sale here in San Diego CA. The family was Jewish and had ties to Morocco. I included a photo of the words written on the box it was in, which are "Bengiyat" (a known Sephardic name) and also "Tanger", another spelling of Tangiers. I also contacted an expert who is a college professor and historian on the wedding traditions and costumes of that region. He estimated that this hizam was made in the late 19th or early 20th century. I can provide a copy of this information upon request.This hezam is in good vintage condition.
