You've heard it said many times - the vintage U87's sound "sexier" and "more euphonic". There's just more body and a more pleasing sound than you get from the newer ones. This is the special version Neumann U87, serial number 36993. This was built for the European market (as opposed to the U-87i which was the "international" version) and was issued with a 7-pole Tuchel connector. This was the first version of the U87 which can operate on phantom power or from internal batteries. When operating on batteries, it can even feed an unbalanced mic input, such as on a cassette or portable digital recorder. When I purchased the mic from Mercenary Audio in 1996 I was told that it came from a prominent British recording studio. (Mercenary Audio refit the mic with a Neumann issued three-pin XLR connector. The forth pin is a switch that turns the batteries on/off whenever an XLR connector is inserted. If there are no batteries installed, it runs on phantom power like any other condenser microphone.) This mic is in GREAT shape. I have cared for it well - it is in the exact shape as when I purchased it from Mercenary Audio.
