SECRET SECTS AND CAT WORSHIP

Perhaps the most renowned of the three great military Orders founded in the twelfth century for the protection of Jerusalem, is that of the Knights Templars. The story of their phenomenal growth in numbers, wealth, and power, which made them for more than a hundred years one of the most influential forces in the molding of European politics, is dramatically followed by their even more sudden downfall and annihilation during the reign of Phillip the Fair of France

A very short time previously Phillip had spoken of his special love for the order

Two principal classes of accusation w brought against the Order. First, the denial of God and of Christ, embodied in the Articles I to XIII, and second, the worship of the devil and the practice of sorcery. It was affirmed that Satan himself presided over the Templars' secret midnight assemblies, and made appearance among the celebrants in the form of a black Tom-cat, or some other hideous four-footed monster, and that on these occasions sacrifices of infants and young girls were offered to propitiate the fiend.

Without any proof of the truth of such terrible charges the Templars were t and then denounced as the enemies of God

Eliphas Levi accuses the Templars of following the occult practices of the Luciferans, and further asserts that they were "initiated into the mysterious doctrine of the Kabala."

Although the persecution of the Templars was carried out so ruthlessly by their religious antagonists, it failed to exterminate their doctrines, rites, and ceremonies. Dormant for a period, the fourteenth century was their revival and their recovery was further aided in the fifteenth by the development of the Rosicrucian Society in Germany

Like the Templars, the Gnostic sect of the Manicheans were accused by their persecutors of many terrible and incredible crimes, and were said to worship the devil in the form of a black cat.

GHOSTLY CATS

Sickness of some kind had kept me to my room for a week, and I had wondered why my cat Minnie had not courted my company as usual, but accounted for her sudden indifference by a possible reflux of motherly devotion to her kitten, now about six weeks old. The first morning of my convalescence the bedroom door, which stood ajar, opened a little further, and Minnie came in. She rubbed her pretty tortoise-shell tabby coat against me in affectionate greeting; she clasped my hand with ecstatic paws in a pretty fondling gesture that was all her own; she licked my fingers, and I felt her white throat throbbing with her loud purring, and then she turned and trotted away. 'Minnie has been in to see me at last,' said I to the maid who brought in my lunch. 'I wonder why she has kept away from me so long.'

"'Minnie's been dead and buried these two days, and her kitten's fretting itself to skin and bone for her,' said Louisa, looking scared. 'Your mamma wouldn't tell you while you weren't well, Miss, for she knew you'd take on, being that fond of the little cat.' Minnie was undoubtedly dead and buried, and a stone from our garden rockery was piled upon her place of burial, yet a...
