This is a very nice brass Theodolite or Transit Level?? made by E R WATTS of London - c. 1900 - 1916, the famous optical and surveying instrument maker. The instrument is of lacquered/polished brass construction and obviously of exceptional quality. It is clearly marked Director No 5. MkI and carries the War Office Crowsfoot (Broad Arrow) markings.

I am uncertain what use this instrument was ulitmately used for, but as the makers name has been etched out and the instrument now carries the military marks, I assume it was adopted for Artillery use or similar. I am also a little uncertain when this instrument was made. Whilst I understand these were issued to the military during World War One, it is very likely it was made quite a bit earlier than this. If anyone can provide additional information about this item, I would be very pleased to hear from them.

Considering it's age, overall this piece of equipment is in excellent condition.

It comprises a scope section, with two spirit levels mounted on a swivel base, which is adjustable for levelling etc. It has a female threaded connector on the undeside for installation on a tripod.
