Up for auction is a vintage hoof gauge that has raised letters identifying it as a Ruidoso Hoof Gauge. It is a lot larger and bulkier than the modern hoof gauges. It appears to made from aluminum so at least they tried to keep the weight of it down. It works in the same way that most hoof gauges do- you set the horse's hoof down on the flat metal plate and align the swinging arm with the angle of the hoof. The degree of the angle can then be read on the underside of the tool. It reads from 40 degrees to 60 degrees. The hoof gauge is approximately 6-3/4" long and 5-5/8" at the widest point.It would appear that originally the gauge was coated with a brass color which is still mostly evident on the bottom. The inset part on top with Ruidoso Hoof Gauge written on it is also still a brass color but much of the rest of the top is worn down to a gray metal color. The back of both sides of the support for the swinging measurement part is stamped Hobbs NM. I wonder if one of the QH race horse guys came up with this invention a while back. It probably didn't make anyone rich.If you enjoy collecting older horse care or farrier items this might be an interesting item to add to your group of horse stuff.
