Vintage Schoop Black Island Lady Figurine Pottery Vase

This lovely vintage figural art pottery vase is marked 108, Hedi Schoop, Hollywood, California. This island lady in her sarong is said to have been modeled after Josephine Baker. She measures approximately 13 1/2" tall and has no chips or cracks. Her skirt and top were incised with lines before the pottery was fired so they have a "textured" effect. The flowers can be placed into the vase through her basket that has a space on the inner side that continues into the bottom of the figurine. She has been in my collection for many years. This piece is truly an example of American pottery at it's finest.

Hedi Schoop and her husband came to the United States in 1933 fleeing Nazi Germany. Ms. Schoop opened her pottery company in the 1940's and the business remained open until 1958 when it closed due to a fire. Ms. Schoop lived in North Hollywood until her death in 1996.
