Thinning out my collection! I have over 150 Terrible Towels and Terrible Towel items. I will be listing some duplicates over the next few weeks. In this auction, we have listed a gold Limited Edition Terrible Towel printed before Super Bowl XIV, which took place on January 20, 1980 in Pasadena, CA. Pittsburgh beat the Rams 31-19. This towel was the first Limited Edition that was produced in the Gimbels era (mid-1979 to ~1985). Note, that this towel has to official Terrible Towel logo with the TM. The trade mark was registered in mid-1979 when, due to huge demands, Gimbels Department Store (in downtown Pittsburgh) was given the exclusive rights to market the Terrible Towel and Terrible Towel products. Although the Terrible Towel had been around sice the 1975 Play-offs, they were originally not a production item. In fact, the first couple of years, people were simply asked by Myron Cope and WTAE to bring gold or black towels to the games and wave them. Soon, various individuuals, organizations and entrepreneurs around western Pennsylvania w ere screen printing or "ironing on" wording and selling or giving away Terrible Towels. By the 1978-79 season WTAE and Cope had come up with the now famous "The Terrible Towel" logo, based on the lettering of the Steelers name logo and they were mass producing them.
