Welcome Thank you for visiting! Artus Van Briggle (a corruption of Breughel) was a classically trained artist from Belgium. Because he had tuberculosis, he decamped to America and married Anne, leading to the arched "double A" mark common on their production. Both had worked for Rookwood and had strong ideas of what they wanted to do. Artus experimented with Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts designs while Anne developed glazes incorporating the mountain colors of Colorado Springs w they settled in 1901. After Artus died, Anne operated the pottery independently, marrying a few years later. After Anne took control, she allowed individual artisans to accept commissions for unique "original" pieces to be handcrafted with the Van Briggle identity after potters had finished their required production. This is one of those unique pieces. It is a low planter such as you might use for jonquils or daffodils. The outer circumference is approximately six inches and the mouth is about four inches. It is about two and one-half inches deep and glazed in mulberry with a blue airbrushed highlight over the organic design (perhaps a crocus) on the side of the bowl. It has been used for its designed purpose, as it had some mineral deposits on the interior wall which I was able to remove. Marks on the base include the "Double A" arch inside a square,
