Henry Francis Cary (6 December 1772 – 14 August 1844) was a British author and translator of classical and medieval works. His blank verse translation of Dane earned the praise of Samuel Taylor Coleridge became regarded as a standard, passing through four editions in the translator's lifetime. John Flaxman R.A. (6 July 1755 – 7 December 1826) was a British sculptor and draughtsman and a leading figure in British and European Neoclassicism. His illustrations to Dante's Divine Comedy served as an inspiration for such artists as Goya and Ingres, and were used as an academic source for 19th-century art students. (Source: Wikipedia). Spine cocked, boards rubbed, chipped at spine. Ink and water stains to text block. Front hinge cracked. Still a very pleasing reading copy of this classic translation of Dante with Flaxman's sculptural line drawings.
