Unique, sterling silver and onyx necklace of linked Egyptian motifs. Ornate scarabs alternate between pharaohs and hieroglyphs set on to black onyx and framed in sterling. Each hanging piece is approximately 3/4" x 1/2". Total length is 18&1/2". Weight: 25.5 grams. When Tutankhamen's tomb was opened in 1922, the world became fascinated with all things Egyptian, and this was particularly reflected in the design of accessories and adornments. The Egyptian revival designs often were blended with the sophisticated geometrics of Art Deco style, as seen in this necklace. Since ancient times, scarabs have always represented rebirth, new life, the sun rising, and good fortune. This piece is particularly rare as it was actually made in Egypt; most pieces of this kind were produced in the U.S. or France. The necklace is stamped on the back of each festoon with Egyptian assay marks. The marks are a guarantee of minimum silver content- in this case it's a minimum of 800 purity. However, the piece has been acid tested and tests positively as sterling silver. (.925) Go back in time, into Tutankhamen's tomb, and revel in the exotic mystery of Egypt's treasures while you enjoy this beautiful necklace.
