I have been told that this is a 3-way pistol powder case made of brass in approx 1850. The spring looks to be original and is strong and working well as is the swivel cover to the top compartment. I took this to an Antique Militaria shop. The gentleman examined it and explained it was an original piece from the 1850's. He also showed me a rifle that it may have been used with.
(I do not know what the black material is wrapped around the flask and it is not something I asked the dealer)
