WEDGWOOD “Connecticut Laurel” Milk Jug designed for G. Fox and Company

WEDGWOOD “Connecticut Laurel” Milk Jug
This Wedgwood Queensware milk jug is in the “Connecticut Laurel” pattern. Mountain Laurel (sometimes called “Connecticut Laurel”) is the State Flower of Connecticut, and the star-shaped flowers adorn the lower half of this jug.
This milk jug is marked on the bottom: “Designed especially for G. Fox & Co.”
G. Fox & Co. was a large department store that originated in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1992, all G. Fox & Co. stores were renamed Filene’s, so this jug was produced no later than 1992.
The jug is also marked “Engraved by the Wedgwood Studios” – a mark which was first used in 1964.
The church steeple pictured on the jug is typical of the dozens of Federal-era Congregational churches found in Connecticut. This one is probably the First Congregational Church in Farmington.
The jug is approximately 6 1/2 inches high, 4 1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point, 5 1/2 inches wide including the handles, and holds a little over 3 cups (24 fluid ounces). Fully marked on the bottom, including WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND.
